Wartime Log

Check out our submission to Narrative Threads, a virtual exhibition hosted by the Textile Museum of Canada!

Wartime Logs were given by the Red Cross and the Canadian Y.M.C.A to prisoners in German POW camps during WWII. This one was kept by Romeo Hamelin, of Montreal, who was a crewmember on board the A.D. Huff, a paper boat that was sunk by the German battlecruiser Gneisenau in 1941. Following the sinking, the surviving crew was taken to Germany and placed in POW camps until the end of the war. Romeo Hamelin gave his Wartime Log to Paul Hachey, of Eel River Crossing, NB, who he said was his best friend during his time in captivity.
